Kyaka II Refugee Settlement
There are over 1.5 million refugees in Uganda,
and Kyaka II Refugee Settlement hosts 130,000 of these refugees. Located in South Western Uganda, the Government of Uganda created Kyaka I Settlement in 1984 to address the influx of Rwandan refugees at the time. In 2005, Kyaka I merged with Kyaka II. The settlement now encompasses nine zones and 81.5km2. In December of 2017, Kyaka II faced an influx of refugees fleeing the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The majority of the refugee population in Kyaka II is now Congolese, and this population continues to grow as the DRC’s internal conflict and rebel groups create instability in the region.
77% of Kyaka II’s refugees are women and children. Investing in education and women’s health, therefore, is paramount to easing the burdens refugees in Kyaka II face.
Within the settlement, Angels Care Medical Clinic is one of three medical clinics.
It is in the context of Kyaka II that Angels Care Uganda works to bring hope to refugees. By meeting educational, medical, and social needs, our mission is to bring relief and sustainable development to this community in need.
